I’ve made Dal twice in the last week: it’s so comforting, healthy and cheap. Clearly there are a thousand ways to make this, this is how I did it this week.
Ingredients:
1 cup red split lentils
½ tin, chopped tomatoes
1 tablespoon, tomato puree
inch long piece of fresh ginger, grated
2 garlic cloves, grated
3-4 cups, water
Spices:
1 piece cinnamon bark/stick
4 cardamon pods
1 teaspoon, ground cumin
1 heaped teaspoon, tumeric
1 teaspoon, ground coriander
1 dried red chilli
How I made it:
Place all the ingredients in a pan. Bring to a simmer and cook on a low heat for 30 minutes-40 minutes until the lentils have almost disintegrated. Add more water if necessary. Remove cardamon pods, dried chilli and cinnamon bark if you can be bothered (not that much fun to eat). Season well with salt.
Eaten with:
Sweet potato pickle and rice.
