A colleague recently gave me some almond confectionary called Turrón after a holiday in Spain. Scandalously, I have taken to having it sliced on toast with salted butter: I can only recommend it. Also, the Turkish baker at the bottom of my road has been making beautiful bronzed twisted pastries filled with Tahini and sugar. So today, feeling jaded after an excellent Christmas party and with no intention of de-robing from my dressing gown, I decided to make my own sweet nutty hangover cure: French toast with tahini. I liked it. I am intending to acquire some almond butter to make it with that sometime, too.
Ingredients:
1 large egg
1 tablespoon of tahini (or other nutty butter e.g. almond)
1/2 tablespoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of milk
pinch of salt
bread – I had a french stick, 4 small slices
To cook and serve:
butter to fry
1/2 tablespoon of soft brown sugar to serve
How to make:
Mix all the ingredients apart from the bread in a flat oven tray. Soak the slices of bread in the mixture turning over until it’s all soaked in – leave them in it for 5 minutes.
Melt a knob of butter in a frying pan on a medium heat. When it’s frothy, add the bread. Turn over when golden brown underneath. When both sides are golden. Remove the bread onto a kitchen towel to soak up any excess grease. Serve with the sprinkling of soft brown sugar.
